when everything feels too much

Writing to our highest self

when everything feels too much

When everything feels too much, I often end up with a pen in my hand.
I empty out the contents of my head and heart onto a page.
Like opening the window for fresh air on a long drive, writing brings me relief.

When I’m feeling really stuck, I think of my friend Wren Jones, and how she turns to writing like a medicine - to bring herself relief.

A poet, writer and artist, Wren is this week’s podcast guest.
A few years ago, she wouldn’t call herself a writer.
But today, she is a published writer and poet.
Listen to my conversation with Wren to learn what changed for her.
And, be prepared: this episode may embolden and soften you all at once.

On writing to God

When everything feels too much, I write letters to God.
I call in wisdom from something greater than me, greater than my own thinking mind.
I release what feels hard — and I let something flow back to me through my hand.

This week, I wrote to God.
Here’s what came up.

Everything just feels like too much right now.

Touch lightly.

I want to be everything to everyone.

That is your nature. Love that. Let it go.

I’m afraid that I’m doing something wrong.

Wait for an intuitive nudge.

Letters to God is something Wren and I share with each other.
Writing has been a central piece in Wren’s life since childhood but it wasn’t until the start of the pandemic that she started to call herself a “writer.”
Up until that point, there was hesitation and imposter syndrome.

“Who am I to call myself a writer? Am I worthy of this title?”

Many of us struggle with this “Who am I to…” kind of question.
Wren did too.
And then something changed.
After several decades of following the mainstream map of her white, middle-to-upper class upbringing - her life path took an unexpected turn. And, in that moment, she began to unapologetically, wholeheartedly be herself.

We often hear this phrase “just be yourself” – but what does it actually look and feel like?
And, how do we put it into practice?

My conversation with Wren Just might answer some of these questions.
You can follow or subscribe to my podcast, A Success Of Our Own, here and be the first to receive Wren’s episode when it drops Tuesday morning.
